On New Years Day, a group of NFSJ staff, board and steering committee members, former interns, volunteers, and their families gathered to prepare dinner for 60 people at The Dwelling Place Soup Kitchen in Woburn. While we have long been aware of The Dwelling Place — located at the Woburn United Methodist Church — we formally became acquainted with the organization and its indefatigable leader, Pastor Bill Hoch, in the fall, when we organized a baby care drive and soccer game for new arrivals from Haiti. Pastor Bill has been one of the leading figures in helping to settle these new community members.
As we raced around the kitchen chopping, stirring, and plating bowls of chili, salad, cornbread and dessert, we were reminded of the many ways that activism and movement building can look. Happy New Year to all!
